Dachau Concentration Camp

November 22nd--After 6-7 miles of walking and hiking (roughly 6, 700 kilometers), I was ready for a big sleep. And also, I only had one thing on the agenda for the day--Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site.

I woke up late, showered, and washed my socks in the sink. The glamorous life of travel! I then got on the S-Bahn and took the 30 minute journey to Dachau, a suburb of Munich. There I got on the bus to go to the camp.

I actually rearranged my trip because of this visit; I was going to spend three nights in Prague, but then I realized that if I took the Neuschwanstein trip I wouldn't have any time to see a concentration camp site while I was in Europe. Feeling that that would be somewhat morally irresponsible, I changed things around.

I spent three hours walking around, and I didn't take too many pictures, but here are a few of them. It was an endlessly affecting place for me, as I kind of expected. I think it's an essential experience if you're ever close to one in Europe.

A memorial sculpture

A memorial intended to represent all the colored triangles prisoners were identified with, put up in the 60's. Conspicuously absent are the pink triangles for homosexuals. It wasn't until the 90's that a separate memorial was created for them, housed in the museum. Liberation didn't quite set everything right.
