The French Riviera on a Budget

December 8th--Friday the 7th was a long day of travel.

I left Rome at 10:00 and got into Genoa at 3:30. There I had a one and a half hour layover before the train to Nice, so I decided to do something I had never done before. I sat down on my backpack outside the train station, laid my guitar case out in front of me with a little change, and started playing.

It was maybe not the best spot to be because buses kept coming by and obscuring the sound, but it still worked out alright--I got 4.50 Euro for the hour, which was pretty thrilling. I could get used to this...

At 4:50 or so, the train pulled into the station, with Mike onboard. He had had a quick stay in Venice, and then went through Milan on his way to Nice. We reconnected and hung out during the 3 hour trip to Nice.

In Nice, we managed to get a six-bed dorm to ourselves, again because of the offseason. We found a great little place to have dinner, then walked down to see the water. Nice is a beautiful, clean town, but the waterfront looks disturbingly like L.A., and there was an entire district of little cafes and restaurants that seemed to go on forever.

Today we go to Barcelona, via Montpellier, where we have a three hour layover. Maybe I can make some more money there!

Hey, Creighton. I just read through your entire blog, and wow, what an excellent trip. The longest I went to Europe for was 6 weeks when I was about your age. I don't remember meeting anyone as excting as Jerry Seinfeld.

I love the photos and the stories. When do you return? If you see any other CIFC folks say hi to them. Great to see photos of Cait and Angela.

Makes me want to get back on the plane, train, boat, bike, whatever and meet new people.

Stay safe and call when you get back. Lots going on on the island.
